6 Historical Courtyards Reopen in Seattle, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Omaha, Tulsa, and Amarillo
August 10th, 2011Come for the room, stay for the story: six historical Courtyards are reopening in downtown Atlanta, Philadelphia, Omaha, Seattle, Tulsa and Amarillo.
Located in the heart of the city’s historic center, the brand new Courtyard Seattle Downtown Pioneer Square was once the 1904 Alaska Building, which was Seattle’s first skyscraper, and the tallest building at the time. Look around you at the exterior, as well as the marble lobby, crown molding, window framing and wood pillars – these are all the originals, and painstakingly maintained over the years. The hotel also still has Beaux Arts details, prominent over the turn of the century, but now a rarity in Seattle.
Courtyard Atlanta Downtown is located in the historic Carnegie Building, built in 1925. The building architecture combines pre-modern elements with some applied ornamentation in the Beaux Arts style, with curved corners to accommodate the triangular space the building occupies. There’s a basement, crawlspace, and entrances on all three elevations.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Courtyard Philadelphia Downtown was built in 1925 in the heart of Center City, within walking distance of the Financial and Historic Districts, Avenue of the Arts and other landmarks. The marble accents, bronze work, plaster detailing and building architecture are all done in the Beaux Arts style.
Courtyard Omaha Downtown/Old Market Area actually merges two historical buildings: the Kirschbraun and Sons Creamery building and the Anton Hospe Music Warehouse. The former contributes terra cotta detailing and a striking entryway, complete with marble staircase. The latter is features an extended roof comb and arched windows.
Formerly the Atlas Life Building, the Courtyard Tulsa Downtown preserves original building features dating back to 1922, including the signature neon sign out front. Moreover, the VIP seventh floor preserves significant historical details, including the original wood doors, marble wall panels, and plaster ceilings.
Texas’s Courtyard Amarillo Downtown occupies the historic Fisk Building, designed by local architect Guy Carlander in 1927. Now updated with 107 guest rooms and suites, 42” flat panel TVs and high-speed Internet, the hotel balances old with new—all the while still preserving its fabulous downtown views.
