5 Must-Sees in Atlanta, Georgia

If you’re headed down south this summer, Atlanta – the “Capital of the South” – awaits. Our five favorite picks:

1. Swim with (or just look at) sharks at Georgia Aquarium

As the largest in the world (over 8 million gallons of water!), the Georgia Aquarium is a family-friendly attraction by day. But perhaps less known is that it’s equally appealing to singles for a fun night out. On any given day, swim with whale sharks or get up close with beluga whales. Through September, you can listen to live jazz on Friday night Jazz Journeys. And on October 13, the Aquarium will also be hosting the sixth annual Aqua Vino, where you can sample over 200 fine wines and gourmet eats from local restaurants, listen to live music, and partake in a silent and wine auction.

2. Get some fresh air at Stone Mountain Park

Just 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta, Stone Mountain Park has plenty to do in its 3,200 acres. Ride the Summit Skyride, a Swiss cable car that takes you to the top of the mountain, to see an unbeatable view of the city skyline. Adrenaline junkies will gravitate towards Sky Hike, one of the largest adventure courses in the country. And families can enjoy the 4-D Yogi Bear movie in the theater, or the Lasershow Spectacular, the world’s longest-running lasershow.

3. Have a picnic in Centennial Olympic Park

Take a seat in history—literally. As the world’s gathering place during the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, you can now still enjoy the Fountain of Rings (a refreshing cool-off in the summertime if you don’t mind getting a little wet); Fourth Saturday Family Fun Days, a free festival with hands-on activities (through September); and Music @ Noon, a free lunchtime concert (every Tuesday and Thursday through October).

4. Hit up one of the many city festivals.

Atlanta is known as a cultural hub in the south, so there are events going on throughout the year. Indie film buffs will love the Atlanta Underground Film Festival held in late September, and August’s free Festival Peachtree Latino showcases free live music and host of ethnic food to explore. Check the city calendar to plan accordingly.

5. Take in a show at Fox Theatre

Smack in the middle of the city, Fox Theatre shows everything from Broadway shows to Billboard rock shows to just-released movies. Catch Robin Thicke’s performance or “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” this weekend,  or get tickets to “Guys and Dolls” in August. Check the schedule to see a complete line-up.

Plus, now when you stay the weekend at Courtyard Atlanta Airport South/Sullivan Road and you’ll get a $25 gift card for use at any Marriott Hotel – use it for a drink or meal in The Bistro, or save it for a future stay. (Offer valid through August 27, 2011.)
